Dear friends of classical music,
Below you can find some reviews from the March issues that caught my eye:
Monteverdi Orfeo
'Recorded live in performance at the Gran Teatro de Liceu in Barcelona and already issued on DVD, Savall's L'Orfeo on audio disc becomes an immediate benchmark.'
Early Music Today

Bach Mass B Minor
'While some might consider Gardiner-F˘s account over-interpreted, for this reviewer the results are near-perfection. A B minor not to be missed %G–%@ I˘d add another star if the editor would let me!'
-A Choir & Organ

Beethoven Mass in C
'This is a stunning performance.'
'Michael Tilson Thomas marshals together this first-class force of soloists, chorus and orchestra and, bringing out all the joyous drama of the score, drives them to a dazzling performance.'
Choir & Organ

Anne Boleyn's Songbook - Alamire
The ensemble singing of Alamire is of an extremely high order, and the lower voices (six across the multiple tenor lines, two baritones and three basses) produce a sound which may in the most technical possible fashion be described as -Fˇstonking˘.
-A Early Music Today

Zandonai - Francesca de Rimini
'From the Theater Freiburg comes a real winner. Fabrice Bollon conducts with that peculiar blend of perfumed delicacy and Grand Guignol that pervades the opera, and his orchestra and chorus respond with passion.'
Opera Now

Rachmaninov - Piano Concertos
'But if you wish to hear a Rachmaninov of a rare eloquence and seriousness, then de la Salle is for you. Her unusually measured start to the Third Concerto allows the opening theme all of its gentle melancholy, and those long-delayed climaxes time to soar and expand.'
International Piano

De Almeida - Il Trionfo d'Amore
'Il Trionfo, for six voices and an orchestra comprising trumpets, horns, oboes, recorders, strings and continuo, follows a typical baroque plot-line involving pairs of star-crossed lovers, but its 12 da capo arias and two duets, beguilingly tuneful and deftly orchestrated, show Almeida-F˘s original touch.'
-A Early Music Today

Bach - Brandenburg Concertos
'This recent version by Florilegium is richly rewarding and sits comfortably alongside those of the English Baroque Soloists and the Dunedin Consort to create a premičre league triumvirate.'

Happy reading and listening!
