Klaus-Jürgen Etzold draws a pleasing balance from his young choir, who clearly appreciate this wide range of Eric Whitacre’s work, the best of which seems to be that composed around 2000 – Sleep and Lux Aurumque, with its sequel of a decade later, Nox Aurumque. The earliest pieces are the substantial Cloudburst featuring percussion; She weeps over Rahoon, an inconsequential setting with cor anglais and piano accompaniment; and Water Night (1994), an atmospheric poem by Octavio Paz. The singing is good, but too much Whitacre becomes soporific.
