It is difficult to decide the best attribute of this recording, such is the quality of performance from the St Thomas Choir and Gewandhausorchester (in the classical and romantic pieces) and the period band in all the Bach – cantata movements and choruses from the St John Passion. The combination of (mainly) Bach’s music with key pieces by Mozart, Mendelssohn and Brahms, really shows the choir offto full effect. Despite performing in its proper liturgical context a Bach cantata every Sunday of the year, the Thomanerchor sings later repertoire with equal conviction. For the real sound that Bach must have worked with in his daily round, this disc is a must.
