The death of Jehan Alain in combat in 1940 at the age of 29 robbed the last century of one of its most original and inquisitive compositional talents. Taught by Dupré but perhaps more deeply influenced by Chopin and Debussy, his music is every bit as lithe, lyrical and expressive. Yoann Tardivel certainly seems finely attuned to its questing intelligence and often ethereal poetry in this highly enjoyable compendium, beautifully rendered on the characterful Victor Gonzalez organ of Saint-Jacques in Dieppe.
