If you like Stravinsky and Bartók, you’ll love this. Petrassi’s Magnificat is incandescent with human energy and divine intervention, and this premiere recording, graced by the lovely-toned and virtuosic soprano Sabina Cvilak, does full justice to the rich choral writing and busily shifting orchestral colour. Salmo IX demands even more from this highly disciplined opera chorus and they are equal to every challenge. Recorded in the Teatro Regio, there is remarkably lively sound quality, beautifully balanced and spacious. This music demands utter attention, pins you to the seat with its force and rewards repeated listening.
