horizontal line

This CD begins and ends, very simply, with plainchant, but in between the King’s Singers weave a complex meditation on a text so familiar its elements need constant refreshment. Each section begins with an ‘Our Father’, by Josquin, Schütz, Stravinsky, Duruflé, Tavener and Bernstein, each sung with due regard not just for language but for the respective cultural position of the Lord’s Prayer. What follows each ‘line’ are further explorations, using material by Byrd, Poulenc, Lassus, Palestrina, Victoria, Hans Leo Hassler, Purcell, William Harris and Richard Farrant. It could easily be bland and over-conceptualised, but it’s done with enormous skill and thought. A quite remarkable project and recording.
