Janáček’s inspired setting of the Old Church Slavonic Mass was, like much of his work, confused by misguided adjustments to details of the original manuscript. But Cambridge scholar Paul Wingfield, following publication of his 1992 detailed study of the work, produced the currently accepted edition on which Janowski bases his recording, with the Intrada at both beginning and end. Apart from rather palpitant soprano and tenor soloists, this is a vigorous and well-balanced recording of a highly spirited performance, with strong choral forces using the original Czech text.
