This CD of 16th- to 21st-century English music is the girl choristers’ recording debut with Southwark Cathedral’s lay-clerks, and a very fine effort it is too. The interesting and well thought out programme, with first recordings of works by Judith Bingham, Martin Bussey, David Terry and Huw Morgan, shows the choir to best advantage, the quality of the men’s voices being an excellent foil to the girls’. In the opening riveting performance of Parry’s I was glad, the standard never falters. Particularly impressive is the interpretation of the sub-text to Bingham’s fine Missa Brevis. There is much to enjoy and I look forward to the next CD.
