I find it almost unbelievable that the appearance of this new volume from Novello is the first time all of Thomas Tallis’s tunes for Matthew Parker’s psalter have been published together. This alone makes it hugely praiseworthy, and that’s even before the many other merits of this publication have been considered. David Skinner has brought his extensive experience of Tudor music to bear on this project, which also includes all of Tallis’s surviving anthems in English, the evening Dorian Service and the five-part set of Preces and Responses. Though a fairly slim volume (just under 100 pages of music), this new book is ideal for use by choirs of all standards: suitable transpositions have been selected to make the pieces comfortably performable (scores at original pitches are available online) and keyboard reductions are provided for those works not in short score. The presentation and layout are excellent, and Skinner’s introduction and notes are clear, thorough and concise; in short, this is a ‘must-have’ for choir libraries up and down the land.
