In this 160-minute masterclass, Rachel Podger empathises with the challenges faced by the five students involved, whether playing solo Bach with baroque or modern instruments and bows. She discusses issues arising from their performances and suggests alternative ways of interpreting the music in order better to communicate its meaning, often citing evidence for the insights she shares. Subjects discussed include the differences between baroque and modern instruments and their playing techniques, bringing out the bass line and pinpointing sequences and harmonic subtleties, shaping phrases, spreading and balancing chords and securing optimum resonance, taking time to convey musical expression and meaning, and varying bow speed for timbral variety. More practical demonstration from Podger herself would have earned the fifth star.
