Resident organist Martin Setchell puts the Rieger in the Town Hall (currently closed due to earthquake damage) through its paces with a delicious programme of ear teasers skilfully performed. Bona fide organ music cohabits with transcriptions and ‘funnies’, but the disc is none the worse for this.

Martin Setchell’s playing is sparkling and slick, and with the crystal tones of the organ the whole experience avoids any feel of vulgarity. Mention must be made of the opening Toccata by Renault, Setchell’s nifty fingerwork in the Flight of the Bumblebee and some of the lush and contrasted quieter registrations. Recorded sound is excellent and the booklet design attractive.
