The young singers of the St Johannes Chamber Choir number nearly 40, and the ensemble was founded by its director Karin Oldgren in Stockholm. Swedish choirs often bring a lightness of tone and easiness of line, especially when recorded singing the music of native composers. Gabriel Wilczkowski (b.1980), Oskar Lindberg (1887-1955), Martin Bagge (b.1958) and Sven Hagvil (b.1953) are represented here, all in (intentionally) reflective works expressing longing. The choir’s intonation is sure, the numbers of singers allow for a powerful yet unforced sound with rich basses and clear sopranos. However, while some of this music is easy to listen to, it is disappointingly undemanding.
