The purpose of this historical document is to raise money for the Magdalen College Choir Fund and the Student Support Fund. It is very difficult to evaluate, as the quality of the very early recordings is predictably excruciating and probably only of interest to former alumni. What is of interest is the arrival of Bernard Rose on the scene in the late 50s, who not only transformed the repertoire but also the sound of the choir. It’s astonishing, and shows the difference one inspired individual can make with the help of organ scholars such as Dudley Moore and Christopher Gower. Also noteworthy is the music performed at the first broadcast of Evensong from Magdalen Chapel on 1 July 1959. There is also a very informative booklet charting the history of the choir.
