Jean-Baptiste Dupont (winner of the 2009 St Albans Improvisation Competition) launches a rare complete survey on disc of Reger’s organ works – a box set of Rosalinde Haas’s late-1990s overview on MDG is currently available on one retail website for £881.83; meanwhile, Roberto Marini and Kirsten Sturm are both recording the intégrale on Fugatto and Naxos respectively. This two-disc first volume offers a strongly contrasted introduction to one of the most vital organ repertoires of the last century. On three instruments, Dupont finds grandeur and gravity in the quasi-symphonic Three Choral Fantasies, variety and vitality of expression in the op.47 Six Trios, dazzling directness and economy in the teeming chorale preludes of op.135a, and brings a scintillating improvisatory edge to the D minor Fantasy & Fugue. A strong start to a survey to watch.
