Nigel Allcoat has chosen mainly early repertoire to show off Bernard Aubertin’s latest organ in the UK and its capacity to speak more than one language. Arauxo transports us to Spain, then sweet flutes speak the Dutch of Sweelinck. The 5-stop box organ Aubertin also supplied to the college is used for variations by Valente, including dazzling scales with the 1ft Sifflet. Titelouze, Balbastre and J.S. Bach vie with Walther and Muffat, and the programme concludes with the Bach Passacaglia. Allcoat’s subtle interpretations communicate complete understanding. A second disc of improvisations is intended to further illustrate the instrument’s palette. The discs also contain a slide show of the organ construction and there are full registrations in the sleeve notes.
