This 1982 performance of Haydn’s Creation propelled La Petite Bande, until then purely baroque-orientated, into the realms of classicism (even to the point of commissioning ‘new’ period instruments). Their 40th anniversary has occasioned a re-release of this stimulating live recording (sung in German) which conveys the excitement that the players felt as they performed the work for the first time together. Kuijken’s direction is expressive, and the many timbres elicited from the early instruments bring new life to this great work. A little ambient noise doesn’t detract from the refreshing sounds and winning interpretations.
