A first encounter with the music of the Norwegian Kjell Habbestad proves enjoyable and rewarding. Eloquently championed by Harald Rise on the expressive 1997 Rieger organ of Bergen Cathedral, Habbestad is clearly a composer with eclectic tastes and the wit and wherewithal to incorporate references stretching from the Middle Ages to modernity – the grandly conceived Introduction & Passacaglia is exuberantly built on themes by his compatriot predecessor, Fartein Valen – to pointed effect. An organ suite, chorales and some wedding music showcases an interesting and entertaining voice.
