An enjoyable collation of choral and organ music by two early 20th-century Germans, Hugo Distler and Jan Bender (with whose music David Herman has long been associated). Distler’s studies for small organ are delightfully airy, his extended Partita on the Advent Chorale Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland (his first major organ work) a set of attractive variations. Bender takes the lion’s share of the disc, the selections from his 90 Kleine Choralespiele – intended ‘for one-armed organists’ – immediately likeable, the well-crafted Sanctus from his Organ Mass full of fantasy. Choral contributions from both err, and happily so, on the side of simplicity and tenderness.
