English they may be, but these mostly early works come from the height of Delius’s vogue in Germany. Whether they also bear much sign of his celebrated sojourn in Florida is more questionable and Holten doesn’t dwell on the question, delivering crisply flowing readings of Songs of Sunset, North Country Sketches and his own arrangements of three songs from 1891 that sit very nicely alongside two admired earlier volumes of Danish and Norwegian ‘masterworks’. Bonde-Hansen has the right voice for Delius, and Reuter adds sombre hues to the more sorrowful of the ‘sunset’ pieces.
