Richard Sparks popularised the term ‘Swedish choral miracle’, but it’s Simon Phipps and the Musica Rediviva team who deliver the most convincing proofs yet. This isn’t a set of reassuring contemporary ‘pops’. The music selected is for the most part multi-layered, harmonically both lush and complex, and rhythmically challenging – what Jan Sandström, represented here alongside senior contemporaries and eight younger followers, calls ‘the melody of Swedish language’. It calls for great singing, precise control and impeccable sound, especially with the surround facility engaged. Engineer Torbjörn Samuelsson and producer Satoko Berger-Fujimoto recreate in vivid 3D the warm, reactive acoustics of Årstad church.
