This disc draws together a valuable collection of Pärt’s choral and instrumental chamber music from across the composer’s career. The Stabat Mater of 1985, with Pärt’s familiar ‘tintinnabuli’ technique, is the most substantial item on the disc and is here given a definitive reading of great beauty and power. Of the shorter items, The Deer’s Cry (2007) (a setting of St Patrick’s ‘Christ with me, Christ before me’), is hypnotic in its repetitions. Hillier and his team of performers are to be congratulated, as is Harmoni Mundi, on an exemplary recording. Anyone seeking an introduction to the Estonian composer’s work could do a lot worse than start with this CD, which has the added bonus of a handsomely produced and informative booklet.
