The key here is the balancing of voices and voices to instruments on the two Church Sonata pieces, KV67 and KV224. The strings shouldn’t dominate, but nor should they be consigned to a neighbouring room. Nethsingha takes a few chances with choral dynamics and pacing, but delivers a Coronation Mass that is both immediately satisfying and points up moments of slackness even in some cherished older recordings. The Ave verum corpus, an amateur choir favourite, gets a definitive reading that should be studied by all choral clubs. A refreshing reinterpretation of familiar material.
