This recording is of a live performance of a fine Bach oratorio not often performed in the UK. Like many cantatas the music was parodied from a birthday ode, and here receives a really admirable performance. Among the fine instrumental and vocal soloists, British singers Michael Chance and David Wilson-Johnson make stylish contributions. Brüggen has a knack of choosing exactly the right tempi, which allow the best balance between structure, rhetoric, expression and rhythmic vitality. The CD begins with a compilation of movements from Cantatas 35 and 156 to form a wonderful three-movement Bach organ concerto.
