Høybye’s music usually has pop or jazz elements and it is his great skill that he makes complex structures swing without asking classical ensembles to sing like Manhattan Transfer. The title piece is written to a libretto by Danish resident Edward Broadbridge, a mad, engaging fantasy with echoes of H.C. Andersen, who is translated by Broadbridge elsewhere on the CD. The church pieces are glorious, too, and sung with earthy immediacy and cool fire. The recording is so close and intimate it almost works like surround sound, which suits this work very well indeed. Lovely.
