This latest recording in Margaret Phillips’s Bach series is played on two really fine contemporaneous organs, of which the Sangerhausen instrument was closely associated with the composer. The imaginative programme, each disc being framed by well-known large-scale pieces, juxtaposes preludes, fugues, concertos, trios and chorale preludes, and Phillips evokes a wide range of kaleidoscopic colour from these old organs. I find myself agreeing with most of her interpretations, and she has an unerring (rare) knack of choosing the right tempi that suit the CD player in a domestic ambience. The playing is clean, correctly articulated, lively and communicative.
