The colours of this Beckerath organ are always vivid and rewarding, especially in music that demands their variety (Salamanca by Guy Bovet, Riff-Raffby Giles Swayne – the longest and most interesting work here). There is fun to be had with Robert Elmore’s Fantasy on Nursery Tunes, though Bovet’s Fugue on Henry Mancini’s Pink Panther Theme doesn’t deliver as much as it promises. The lack of reverberation makes for clarity and therefore exposes the playing. Rhythmic drive and polished articulation are not what they could be, thus the excitement that should be generated falls, for me at least, short of the mark. But all the pieces (including those by Duruflé and Schumann) are fine.
