The surround-sound is just glorious and the singing and playing easily match up, but this is more than a set of test pieces for male, female and mixed choirs, a cappella or accompanied. These are genuinely thoughtful performances of well-trodden material. The Schubert Psalm 23 for women’s choir and piano is exquisite, and the Brahms Funf Gesänge (Rückert texts, plus Klaus Groth’s Im Herbst) is a near-definitive performance. Pedersen gives her female choruses due weight and gets the fellows singing with real delicacy against the warm string ensemble on Schubert’s Gesang der Geister über den Wassern.
