This is a budget price re-release of a 1980s record- ing. Dupré’s E minor Concerto is thrillingly played by Michael Dudman, who must have been a player of very significant stature. While I understand that budget re-releases don’t carry the same booklet as the original releases, this contains just the briefest of programme notes, largely about Dupré’s visit to play the famous Hill organ at Sydney Town Hall and telling us that ‘two of the pieces on this disc were recorded [there]’, without saying which. I suspect the Concerto and the Symphony – the organ on these tracks sounds really exceptionally fine. (Am I imagining that the 64ft Contra Trombone makes a brief appearance during the second movement of the concerto?) The Sydney Symphony Orchestra of the time provides stellar support. Well worth having.
