It is evident from listening to this CD that the task of recording this representative collection of Bramma’s church music has been a labour of love by all involved. Paul Brough and his mixed-voice choir of eleven singers give idiomatic readings of music that is always well-shaped and superbly crafted to its purpose: namely, enriching the Anglican choral music tradition. Conservative in outlook by most contemporary standards, Bramma’s music evinces a fine melodic gift. A personal favourite on this disc is the version of the Russian Orthodox Church’s Kontakion of the Departed, which is given a reading both of simplicity and of sophistication.
