This generously filled CD of three recent choral works by American composer Robert Kyr is to be welcomed. The pair of cantatas – The Cloud of Unknowing and Songs of the Soul – are prefaced by the a cappella anthem The Singer’s Ode, the text of which is by Kyr and seeks, in the composer’s words, ‘to explore the relationship between human and divine love’. This is also the theme of the substantial cantatas. The Cloud of Unknowing (27 minutes) sets an anthology of texts, including words of St Teresa of Avila and from the psalms; Songs of the Soul (47 minutes) is another anthology text derived from religious sources. Craig Hella Johnson conducts the ever-alert chamber choir Conspirare and the Victoria Bach Festival Orchestra in authoritative readings. Voices blend and are balanced beautifully, with Kyr’s characteristic lyrical musical language and transparent textures coming through.
