A valuable conspectus of a fascinating, individual voice in performances that are mostly definitive and often inspired. Often borrowing freely from other composers, his symphonic reversioning of the E flat Mozart string quintet is a delight, albeit a bonkers one! Much of his song output is included, from knotty atonalism to punchy Brecht settings (Gisela May is especially fine), and four operas from Puntilla (very funny) to Einstein (moving but perhaps worthy). Recordings vary from basic to very good: a bargain.
