This disc is Ingrid Fliter’s debut on the Linn label. She is blessed with truly magnificent recording (engineered by Philip Hobbs) and Jun Mãrkl makes the finest possible case for the orchestral contributions. Fliter’s reputation as a Chopin interpreter (from her EMI discs) precedes her, of course. She seems somewhat off-form here, with the tension sagging in both outer movements of the First Concerto. The simplicity of the octave passage in the finale (around 8’00) is marred by the over-careful approach. Again, the Second Concerto is rather low-voltage, leaving this reviewer empty rather than energised, despite the facility of Fliter’s technique and the consistent excellence of the orchestral contributions. The highlights of both concertos are the slow movements.
