Twenty years on from his pioneering, long-deleted Philips set, Franz Bruggen’s Beethoven with his crack European ensemble is again a breath of fresh air. Tempi may not be as fleet as some other recent period instrument versions, but every bar crackles with energy and delight. Excellent recorded sound, capturing a natural concert hall perspective in live recordings from the orchestra’s October 2011 cycle in Rotterdam.
