Nelsons’ take on Britten’s enduring masterpiece is entirely successful. Playing down the operatic, overly dramatic aspect, and with tempi often slower than usual, he achieves a performance that is both finely nuanced and grippingly moving. Soloists, especially Padmore and Muller-Brachmann, make the strongest possible impression in a reading that looks and sounds superb on DVD and Blu-ray.
