Hot on the heels of Erato’s tribute to the late French master, DG’s offering is if anything more impressive. Culled from a number of sources, performances are always reliable, mostly superb: Bychkov winning in orchestral works and Levin at the piano to name but two. Only in some of the chamber works does one crave a little more personality from the performers. Sound is remarkably consistent throughout: a genuinely attractive bargain.
