Recorded late in his long career, in Tokyo in 1988, Starker plays with ageless, age-defying panache and understanding. He has revisited both Bach suites and the Kodály sonata many times; here we have just the C major suite, but both are magnificent performances (as well as enlightening, free masterclasses). Cassadó’s suite is an attractive piece that deserves to be better known. Sound is not hi-fi but, like the picture quality, perfectly clear.
