Gergiev gives us a bold, exciting account of Stravinsky’s wartime cracker: wild and rough at the edges in the outer movements; unsentimental, even brusque in the ‘soft centre’. The Rachmaninov has even more sweep – making an appropriate, if not especially generous, coupling.
