A winning combination of warmth, clarity and insight from this most constantly underrated of British pianists. Too often pigeonholed as a ‘Messiaen-pianist’ – having recorded a complete cycle of his as well as discs of Berg, Schoenberg and Webern – Hill here shows a natural and direct response to Bach’s invention that makes a refreshing alternative to some of his starrier, fl ashier rivals on disc. Cleanly recorded and warmly recommended.
