The sound of yearning – which forms the title of the album and one of the five Lieder from Pfitzner on it – dominated German song from Schubert to Strauss. That theme is enticingly illustrated by Stotijn’s finely shaded voice, from the febrile Pfitzner settings to the lighter uplands of Strauss and a deeply affecting account of Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder.
