Knight’s oboe d’amore sound in Duparc song arrangements lacks Alison Teale’s rich colouration, but his expressiveness on oboe – and that of accompanist Gates – in the Poulenc sonata and Satie and Koechlin song arrangements does impress. Gates’ own sonata for oboe and piano is a pleasing fusion of jazz and classical idioms.
