Pianist and onetime Radio 3 presenter Paul Guinery is a former vice-chairman of the Delius Society, the organisation behind this disc. Delius and his Circle presents the composer’s piano music in the context of works by his contemporaries, and generally shows it to be of superior quality. Although the folk- influenced melodies of the Quilter, Grainger and Moeran have a comforting familiarity and song-like quality, they feel twee and simplistic alongside Delius’s more complex piano works. Apart from the Delius, Bax’s The maiden with the daffodil is the musical highlight of the disc. If Guinery’s intention is to make us feel that Delius’s piano music deserves to be held in higher esteem, he has certainly achieved that.
