Every August, pianophiles from around the world make their pilgrimage to Husum, Germany, for a festival that celebrates lesser-known repertoire and the piano in all its guises. Since 1989, the third year of the festival, Danish label Danacord has recorded CDs containing a cross-section of live recordings from each festival. The discs are released a year in arrears – so this latest offering presents recitals from 2010. The featured repertoire spans the 18th century through to the late 20th century. Highlights include Marc-André Hamelin’s crystalline performance of CPE Bach’s Sonata in E minor and the stunning Hommage à Fauré, the first of Robert Helps’ Three Hommages, played by Jenny Lin. If you’re willing to look beyond the mainstream, this disc – and the Husum Festival’s back catalogue – is well worth exploring.
