What a good idea to put these two settings of the Vesper psalm Dixit Dominus on the same disc, although you might be tempted into trying to guess which one influenced the other. In fact we don’t know, but director Owen Rees in his excellent booklet notes points out the differences without commitment. Suffice it to say this superb young choir gives a riveting performance under the persuasive and lively direction of Rees, complemented by a fine group of soloists and the crisp and sympathetic playing of The Brook Street Band. The two settings are separated by Scarlatti’s delightful short Concerto in G minor directed from the violin by Rachel Harris. Do you prefer the elegant simplicity of Alessandro Scarlatti or the dramatic and harmonically adventurous Handel? Here, you don’t have to choose.
