Husband-and-wife team Daniela Dessì and Fabio Armiliato star in this 2010 production from the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa. The audience clearly loves them: Dessì receives rapturous applause just for stepping onto the stage. Being performed in sets based on those used in the opera’s Rome premiere, the production certainly has style (Act III on the Castel Sant'Angelo is particularly effective) and, as a piece of dramatic entertainment, enthusiastically and well sung, it succeeds. Marco Boemi’s conducting is perhaps a tad ponderous initially but improves immeasurably as the opera proceeds. The production is also blessed with a superb Scarpia in Claudio Sgura.
