This impressive publication by the Austrian photographer Johannes Ifkovits and his wife Evelyn Rillé is a cookbook with a mission: ‘We wanted to do something to make the opera world more open,’ explains Ifkovits, ‘so we chose cooking because eating and drinking bring people together.’

Four pages each are devoted to the favourite recipes of 64 opera stars, including José Carreras, Angela Gheorghiu, Bryn Terfel, Joyce DiDOnato and Juan Diego Flórez. Characterful portraits of these artists as you’ve never seen them before – wielding spatulas, frying pans, cleavers and an odd assortment of foodstuffs – appear next to their handwritten recipes, while quirky interviews provide an insight into the stars’ gastronomic enthusiasms. (Angelika Kirschschlager admits to having Red Bull before performances!). Each recipe also includes a chef ’s tip and wine recommendation from Heinz Hanner, Austria’s award-winning pioneer of molecular gastronomy.
