This, Dukas’ only opera, premiered in 1907, has rightly remained in the repertoire ever since. In this excellent recording as one of the Cologne Broadcasts, the work is also blessed by Marilyn Schmiege as Ariane, handling voluptuously floating lines heavily reminiscent of Debussy. She is well-matched with Jocelyn Taillon as the Nurse. Bass Roderick Kennedy as Barbe-bleue himself does what he can with his 21 bars at the end of Act I (after which he can safely go home, as his appearance in Act II is silent). This is a 1986 recording from West German Radio, by the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra, now reissued. Conductor Gary Bertini does an excellent job at exposing the lyrical texture of the orchestral score, without drowning the singers. The leaflet contains the libretto in French, German and English.
