In his third filmed l’Elisir, it’s Villazon himself who directs, setting the comedy in a Wild West silent film. If it’s a little fussy, it looks marvellous and the humour comes over with clarity and freshness. Villazon is in good voice but outshone by Persson’s exceptional, no-nonsense Adina and an effortlessly suave Dulcamara from D’Arcangelo. Even better is the orchestra, which allows Heras-Casado to deconstruct the score as never before. Well filmed and recorded.
