Alessandrini makes a convincing case for an alternative Vespers sequence to the familiar 1610 set, using single voices spread out in a large acoustic. Vocal and instrumental contributions are perfectly judged, and the intimate scale of the conception is captured perfectly by the engineers. A fine single disc of Monteverdi’s sacred music, even without the bonus DVD.
