Marilyn Crispell and Raymond MacDonald live 3,000 miles apart – in Woodstock and Glasgow respectively – with limited opportunities to play together, yet they seem to have developed a shared musical sensibility. It helps that both are fluent in the lingua franca of free improvisation, and are nearly always able to transform its stock conversational gambits into a more personal and exploratory musical language. Parallel Moments captures a rare UK encounter in 2010, featuring tracks from their appearance at the London Jazz Festival plus others recorded in the studio the following day. Their playing runs a familiar improv gamut of extended techniques, unusual textures and fluctuating degrees of intensity and dynamics, all given an individual spin and superbly executed.
