A nice, shouty version recorded at the South Bank’s ‘The Rest is Noise’ festival in 2013, Hans Graf’s brisk reading restores Orff’s ambiguous masterpiece to the ranks of 20th-century shockers, works that still retain an element of raw surprise. The Rite of Spring it isn’t, but for sheer impact it’s not far off. The soloists know they’re pitching for a rock/noise audience rather than classicists and everyone bears in mind that for most people this is music most recently covered by a former member of The Doors and that used to advertise an after-shave. It’s bracing.
